The high-profile Indian Premier League on Thursday received overwhelming response as India’s top industrialists Mukesh Ambani and Vijay Mallya, and film stars Shah Rukh Khan and Preity Zinta won bids to own teams in the Twenty20 venture.
After much suspense, Board of Control for Cricket in India vice-president and IPL governing council chairman Lalit Modi named the winning bidders, who shelled out staggering amounts to become owners of the Mumbai-based teams.
Reliance Industries chief Mukesh Ambani pipped Vijay Mallya in the bid for the Mumbai team, for US $111.9 million.
The liquor baron, however, won the bid for the Bangalore team, for US $111.6 million.
Actor Shah Rukh Khan, joining hands with Juhi Chawla and Jay Mehta, won the bid for the Kolkata team, for US $75.09 million.
Fellow-actor Preity Zinta and her boy friend Ness Wadia won the bid for the Mohali team, for US $76 million.
Among others, GMR Holdings was successful in bidding for the Delhi team (US $84 million), while India Cements bagged the Chennai team (US $91 million), Deccan Chronicle the Hyderabad (US $107.01 million) outfit and Emerging Media the Jaipur team, for US $67 million.
The bids of ICICI, Sahara and Futures Group were disqualified, Modi said.
“We can say that all the hard work fructified and the IPL is here to stay,” Modi said.
Asked if Shah Rukh was bidding just to use cricket as a means to promote his films, Modi replied, “Shah Rukh loves cricket and that’s why he invested his money. It has got nothing to do with film promotion.
“We have heard a similar complaint in the past but the Board never endorsed those views,” he added.
He also dismissed suggestions that there was a conflict of interests in Indian Cements, which has BCCI treasurer N Srinivasan as a shareholder, becoming a team owner.
“Mr Srinivasan is just a stakeholder there and he is not the owner. So there is no such conflicts of interests,” he said.
Modi admitted that some of the contracted international players would skip the twenty20 tournament, which begins on April 18 owing to national commitments, but said the pool of players is big enough.
“A team needs only four players from abroad and we already have a huge number of them contracted with us. You will have enough of them from the day one,” he said.
In all, 59 matches will be played over 44 days, with ICC umpires officiating the games that will be broadcast live on SET Max.
“We already have 80 contracted players and their auction would start soon. Each franchise will consult with the IPL Governing Council before naming the teams and discussing revenue sharing,” Modi said.
ICC’s anti-doping and anti-corruption units will also keep an eye on the Twenty20 league, he added.
Asked if the base price of US $50 million was too high, he replied, “It’s up to the bidders to decide if the base price was high. Since the winning bid proved much more than the base price, you can’t really say that it was too high.”
Schedules and operational guidelines of the league will be announced later.
Stung by the Essel Group-backed Indian Cricket League, the BCCI had announced the IPL to counter the rebel venture, which has left many state teams depleted.
New Zealand has also suffered a lot as six Kiwi players joined the ICL and pace spearhead Shane Bond too is ready to take the plunge.
The following are the bid amounts:
Vijay Mallya - US $111.6 million, for the Bangalore team.
Shah Rukh Khan - US $75.09 million, for the Kolkata team.
GMR Holdings - US $84 million, for the Delhi team.
Mukesh Ambani - US $111.9 million, for the Mumbai team.
India Cements - US $91 million, for the Chennai team.
Deccan Chronicle - US $107.01 million, for the Hyderabad team.
Emerging Media - US $67 million, for the Jaipur team.
Preity Zinta - US $76, for the Mohali team.

Dhoni, Symonds fetch highest prices in IPL bidding
Franchise owners spent lavishly in a player auction Wednesday for the new Indian Premier League, with India’s Mahendra Singh Dhoni topping the bidding on a day that demonstrated the enormous financial power of the Twenty20 competition.Bidding for the 77 available players reached about $40 million - pending late bids at Wednesday’s auction - and followed on from the $1.026 billion paid for the initial television rights and $723.6 million for franchise ownership.
Chennai trumped Mumbai in the race for India’s limited-overs captain Dhoni, with all team owners cheering the breaking of the $1 million mark as the southern Indian team landed him on a three-year contract worth $1.5 million or €1.02 million per season.
Dhoni, currently leading India in the limited-overs tri-series in Australia, was relaxed about being the most sought player for the league which begins April 18.
“I heard about it from my manager soon after the bid was held. The sum seems to be good and I’m happy, but I was never in any sort of tension about it, nor was I losing sleep over it,” Dhoni was quotes as saying by the Hindustan Times website.

ICL vs IPL, leagues apart

Ever since the launch of IPL last week by BCCI one wonders if the latter was just a knee jerk reaction to ICL or was conceived for the benefit of the game. Indian Cricket League's (ICL) goal is create enthusiasm amongst the budding cricketers, carry that enthusiasm and momentum in the Sachins’ of tomorrow and give the domestic cricketers a chance to showcase their talent. On the other hand IPL's launch last seemed to be a "me too" by bureaucrats who have dominated the game more than the game itself.
Apparently the BCCI league had been conceptualized about 10 years ago but had recently been finalized. I think I can assume with reasonable comfort that ICL's announcement early part of this year expedited IPL by good couple of years.
BCCI top honcho believed just a couple of months ago that a Twenty20 league format (referring to ICL) would serve no good to the game of cricket. And it is rather ironic that a league was launched by the same governing body just a few months later in the same format.
Ever since the launch of the Indian Cricket League (ICL) BCCI mocked at the league commenting from time to time that who would watch a bunch of retired cricketers. On IPL launch in Delhi last week, all I saw was great cricketers who were either retired or on the verge of retiring from the game.
ICC refuses to recognize Indian Cricket League, we all know why. It's interest is to promote its own agenda in the world rather than promoting the game it represents. ICC would never disappoint the richest cricketing board in the world; rather going forward when BCCI current head Mr. Pawar becomes its chief will turn into Indian Cricket Council. It is rather appalling that an incompetent man will represent the council. A man who is on a mission, a mission to progress his personal agenda and solidify BCCI’s monopoly over the game in India.
I see Indian Cricket League emerging as a successful business organization, not ridiculed with bureaucracy and corruption like its counterpart, operating as a autonomous organization, investing in building the cricketing infrastructure and take advantage of its media arm to reach out to all cricket loving fans in India and abroad.

"The Bajji fiasco brought the whole team together" declared Yuvraj. The whole fought like one unit and triumphed over the mighty Aussies !
"India's method paid off " said Ricky Ponting. Earlier the Indian selection had come under severe criticism when they dropped Ganguly and Dravid. Dhoni and the selectors took bold decisions, favouring youth for experience. Youth plus the experience of Sachin finally paid off. Can we say this is more or less the T20 team + Sachin's genius ?
DCA gave 2.5 lakhs to the Delhi boys, Virat Kohli, Sangwan of U19 and Gautam Gambhir, Ishant Sharma and Sehwag !
Each member of the victorious team got 58 lakhs.
More money is in the offing as the contracts of the players like Ishant Sharma, Praveen Kumar by IPL is expected to be 30 lakhs !
More monetary encouragement should mean more professionalism. Let us hope both Teen India ( U19 ) and Team India keep playing to their potential. India is already second in ODIs and 4th in Tests !
"I scored some good runs" said Sachin. He had scored 399 runs and Gautam Gambhir scored 440 runs. Gambhir got 2 checks, one for 58 lakhs and another 2.5 lakhs !

India Rising
A cricket enthusiast writes from Bangkok
Another master class, perhaps his final one on Australian soil, from the Little Master, inspired leadership from Dhoni and great bowling spells from the Indians, saw Australia humbled in their own backyard. To many Indians this is a great victory. To me, it has been India's greatest cricketting summer. Or greatest six cricketing months in it history ! And perhaps the emergence of the next cricketting superpower and the begginning of a crickting decline of another proud nation!
For the 17th time, Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar missed an ODI century by less than 10 runs and failed to add to his 42 scores above the hunderd mark. If his 117 not out at Sydney, was perhaps one of the greatest "chasing" centuries and a payment back to the excellent Indian bowlers, his 91 yesterday with a niggling injury to his groin, was a match deciding, rivetting innings, duly paid back by the disciplined Indian Bowlers... Peter Roeubuk writes that his bat was as wide as the Suez Canal and he was in comand from the start. He has reclaimed his position as the number 0ne ODI batsman in the world this week.
Australia have lost Warne, Mcgrath, Langer, Martin and now Gilchrist and Hogg. Macgill, injury prone, is near his end. Hayden is pushing 37. These holes are always difficult to fill, if not impossible. The loss of Gilchrist is a vital, irreplaceable blow in any form of the game. One has to asuume that Australia's domination is nearing it end.
On September 24th 2007, India won the 20-20 event in South Africa, when no one gave them a chance and without three of their greatest run-getters in its cricketting history ! A commendable feat, yet I put that as third in my list of cricketting achievements. Second of course is the Indian under-19 team's World Cup victory, which proves the secoind line of defence is ready for future battles. But above all, when everyone expected India to be thrashed on both Tests and ODI's in Australia against the best team in the world, we came up trumps. If you are willing to consider that we were cheated (out of at least a draw, if not a vitory) at the Sydney Test, the series is to be deemed a creditable 1-1 draw. The lack of preparation on Australian soil undid us at Melbourne, for sure. But we won at Perth, which no team in recent history has done. Then to beat the World Champions 2-0 to lift the CB series was the icing on the cake.
The last six months have showed the world that India is ready to match its cricketting financial superpower status with its players performing on the field

India moves over to Second Spot in ODIs
As per ICC ratings, India is second team in ODIS. In Tests, however, she is fourth.
Indians have become more professional and their bowlers are concentraing on swing and reverse swing. In Praveen Kumar, they have a bowler who can swing both ways. The other medium fast bowlers, Ishant Sharma, Pathan, Sreesanth, RP Singh, Zaheer Khan etc also have improved considerably. The young batsmen have been coached by none other than (Sir) Sachin Tendulkar. In other words, the Indian team is now more professional.
Credit must be given to Greg Chappell, who suggested this system of putting 33 players on BCCI payroll. Now there is healthy competition amongst players and no single player can be sure of any post. There are competing bowlers, batsmen and wicket keepers.
The coaches have also performed well. In V Prasad, a master of reverse swing, India has an excellent bowling coach. R Singh and Gary Kirsten are also doing their jobs well.
The youngsters have risen to the occasion.
Good Luck, India !

India creates history !
Like the Juniors ( Under 19 team ), the Seniors do it again. Winning against Aussies in Australia is like winning the W C !
All credit to the star performers, Sachin with the bat ( 91 ) and Praveen Kumar ( 4/46).
This is a clear message to the world that Indian cricket has come of age. Two World Cups this season ( the T20 and U19 ) plus this CB series win make India a formidable adversary to the Aussies!
Let us hope India keeps up the winning streak against SA, in the next series.

India does well
India scored 259/8 and Sachin was at his masterly best, scoring 91.
It seems Praveen Kumar has matured into a good swing bowler, as he took 3 glorious wickets and Aussies are now down at 41/3 !
The U 19 team has great potential. Most probably they will be swallowed by IPL with huge perks. Lady Fortune is going to smile on the teenagers !
Uthappa and Sachin put on 94, a good partnership. Uthappa is coming up and with experience can be a good one day batsman.
Let us see how the match progresses !

Super, Duper Sunday for Indian Cricket
People danced on the streets and firecrackers burst everywhere as 300 million cricket crazy Indians celebrated India's twin win !
The Indian U 19 team was invincible. Much credit must be given to the coach, Whatmore.
It was Sachin who gave coaching to the youngsters and the young boys rose to the mark. Gambhir, Uthapa, Rohit Sharma all impressed.
Credit must also be given to the bowling coach, V Prasad, who groomed excellent swing bowlers !

Cricket - English game
- By: Ellen Birkin, 2008-03-02
Cricket is the passion of all Brits. Playing cricket has been a well-known tradition in all English homes from the beginning of 18th century. English cricket was a part of leisure as well as English tea; playing it was considered a status of symbol, an exhibition of good taste. The announcements of cricket tournaments were often published in English newspapers: the pictures of the time depicted the players dressed in white shirts, white breeches and cylinders, elegantly leaning towards the cricket ball.
The Cricket game has been the favored game in most English high schools – the most “rich and famous” schools hold a long history of cricket games. Eaton, Rugby and other selective schools were famous not only because of the education they provided, but also remembered for their sport games and sport groups. Cricket was a symbol of high standard, of belonging to a certain social group. The sight of boys and girls playing cricket on green lawns gave a British citizen feeling of certainty and trust in the strength of British Empire, known worldwide for its physical education.
The rules in cricket are not too difficult and can be easily learned: two teams, of eleven players each, play on grass field, in a center of which is cricket pitch. In some ways it is analogous to the American Baseball: a bowler, whose role in the game is to bowl cricket balls, is analogous to a pitcher in baseball. However, there are different categories of bowlers, relying either on speed or on the rotation of the ball. There are also different codes of behavior, which many players learn from their childhood.
Cricket has maintained its role as the symbol of British tradition – the passion for Cricket, developed in school years, doesn’t fade as the time goes by. These days, Cricket news is popular in certain countries just as much as soccer.

SL 93/6
Indian swing bowlers do it again. SL 93/6 !
Praveen Kumar took 3 wickets. The all rounder India has been waiting for !
Ishant takes the sixth wicket and SL is reeling.
In the last game ( I was so busy with Web 2.0 ) India fought valiantly with Uthappa and Gambhir clicking. Indian boys are short of experience on Aussie pitches and the more they acclimatise, the better will they perform.
So Indian boys not doing badly, even though much more is expected from them !

India beats SL !
A great innings by Dhoni and an equally responsible innings from Dhoni, an unbeaten 50 and India win a thrilling game.
Kumar Sangakara's century goes in vain. He got the Man of the Match award !
Now Yuvraj has come into back and this is good news for India. This is the first 50 he has scored during the Aussie tour. The same Yuvi-Dhoni combine which has steered India so many times has done the trick again.
Now SL will have to work very hard on Friday, as they take on formidable Australia !

The Indian team needs Sehwag. If you play Sehwag, you have an extra bowler and if you play Pathan, you have an extra batsman, said Sastri.
India's performance has not been bad, Down Under. Against the formidable Aussies, India did fairly well and emerged as the No 2 Test team in the world !
It is not easy for any team to defeat Australia !

Sachin creates history, scores 39th hundred !
What a glorious innings ! His 39th hundred and with his 41 ODI hundreds, he has scored 80 hundreds in international cricket, an enviable record indeed !
He remained as the rock of Gibralter, taking on the might of the Aussie pace attack. Assuming the role of sheet anchor, he saw India finish at a respectable 309/5.
Sehwag and Laxman scored half centuries, while Dravid and Ganguly did not impress.
The Senior players need not lament that they are dropped. We saw a lot of criticism directed at the selectors. They simply opted for youth. The ODI and 20/20 team is different totally from a Test team.

India move to 2nd position in Tests, as per ICC Rankings
This is glorious ! India as the second best team in the world, after their sterling performance at Perth ! None of their bowlers rank in the first five, but they did havoc with the Aussie batsmen, skittling them out for 212 & 340 ! They swung the ball more than the Aussies !
Dravid, Laxman and Ganguly has been dropped for the ODI series. The ODI team is different from the Test team, as these three are good for Tests. Maybe age must have been the factor and the selectors wanted a younger side ! It is learnt that Dhoni wanted the T20 winning side. Suresh Raina is back, after an year !

India bowled well, says Ponting
India deserved to win, said Ponting. It is true that the Indian swing bowlers swung the ball more than their Aussie counterparts ! Young Ishant Sharma's bowling to Ponting was a revealation. Wasim Akram gave some fantastic tips to Pathan, just before the match.
Aussies were reduced to 61/5 at their den, from which they never truly recovered. Aussies were at a tremendous advanatage playing at their favourite ground, the fastest in the world. They had not lost any Test there ( except to an England side, when top Aussie players were not there ).
So India has created history at Perth, being the first subcontinental side, to shock the Aussies !

India beats the Lion in his den !
Incredible ! The Indian team beat Australia at Perth, considered to be the best home ground for the Kangaroos. All Indian bowlers did well and Aussies were bowled out !
Pathan took 3 wickets, RP Singh 2 and I Sharma 1. Kumble and Sehwag, the spinners, got 2 each.
Set 413 to win, Aussie fell short by 72 runs.
Beating Australia in Australia is no mean task and congrats to India for good team work !

Indian seamers assert themselves Down Under !
Indian seamers R P Singh with 4 wickets and Sharma, Pathan and Kumble with 2 wickets each, dismiss formidable Australia for 212 !
Singh bowled magnificently, moving the ball in the air and off the wicket. Ishant Sharma took the prize wicket of Ponting and the Kangaroos nosedived to 212.
In the second innings, Sehwag looks in ominous form, out of a total of 57/1. Hope tomorrow, there will be consolidation by India, who seems to be on the driver's seat

India, from a position of strength, nosedives to 297/6. They were 275/4, when disaster struck. Rahul Dravid, who had played so well, got out for 93, just 10 minutes before stumps. This is the tenth time he is getting out in the nineties !
Sachin batted well for his 71. None of the other Indian batsmen could impress. Brett Lee grabbed 3 wickets and M Johnson two.
Let us hope Dhoni and Pathan will prosper in a good partnership.

Western Numerology
The system of numerology is a method of divination which is also employed in the use of magic. The practice is based upon statement of the Greek philosopher Pythagoras, "The world is built upon the power of numbers." Numerological practices and beliefs have survived throughout the centuries down to the present day. An example of this concerns the numbers 11, 22, and 33, that are claimed to be master numbers and must not be reduced to a single digit, which when corresponding to an individual's name prognosticate that the individual is a highly developed person spiritually.
History:
Based upon Pythagoras' previous stated statement, "The world is built upon the power of numbers," numerology became systems of both divination and magic because both systems are based upon the broader concept that the entire universe is composed of mathematical patterns, and all things can be expressed in numbers which correspond to universal vibrations. Therefore, all things, including names, words, birth dates and birthplaces, are able to be reduced to numbers in order to determine personalities, destinies and fortunes of individuals.
Pythagoras is often called the father of numerology since he made known that the musical intervals recognized in his era could be expressed in ratios between the numbers 1, 2, 3, and 4. Also, he displayed that the numbers 1 through 4 equaled the sum of 10. He furthered demonstrated that the cycle of numbers, 1 through 4, could be started again when reaching 10 because all numbers larger than 9 can be reduced by a single digit by adding the digits together. Pythagoras reasoned that the entire universe could be expressed numerically, creating a mystical system expended by other early Greek philosophers.
Throughout the ancient history of numbers certain characteristics and values were assigned to the integers. One mechanism which enabled the assignment of these characteristics was the way in which the ancient Greeks recorded the numbers in dots or geometrical figures. Odd numbers which could not be separated were said to be masculine possessing the "generative parts," and represented assertion, power, and creativity. Even numbers capable of being split into and therefore possessed femine "openings" were considered feminine representing wholeness, stability or weakness.
In the Greek mysteries, the number 888 represented the "Higher Mind." The Greek variation of "Jesus," "Iesous," equals 888. The number 666 represented the "Mortal Mind." In the New Testament, 666 is called the number of "the Beast."
In early Hebrew history the interpretation of numbers was considered highly important. Letters of the Hebrew alphabet was based on numbers, and this relationship was related to the cosmic forces. In the Middle Ages, a numerical mysticism evolved from the teachings of Merkabah, a sect of Judaism. In the 13th century the German Kabbalists developed gematria, a mystic numerical interpretation of the Scriptures.
Both the Greeks and Hebrews held 10 to be the perfect number. Pythagoras considered that 10 comprehends all arithmetic and harmonic proportions, and, like God, is tireless. All nations calculated with it because when they arrive at 10, they return to 1, the number of creation. Pythagoreans believed the heavenly bodies were divided into 10 orders. According to the Kabbalah, there are ten emanations of numbers out of Nothing. The emanations form the 10 sephiroth of the Tree of Life, which contains all knowledge and shows the path back to God.
Gematria: In addition to the occult meanings of numbers , another principle is basic to numerology- -that of gematria, or cryptograph. In Hebrew, consonants are used as number signs, but by providing them with vowels, one can often read them as words and can read words as numbers. A combination of gematria and Pythagorean number symbolism formed the basis for the number magic of the medieval Cabala This allows special reading of the Hebrew Bible to find secret or hidden meanings in the text.
This system has also been applied to Greek and Latin and sometimes the New Testament of the Bible. For example, various personified meanings have been given to 666, the number denoting the Beast in the Book of Revelations. Among these are Nero, Caesar, Martin Luther, Pope Leo X, and Napoleon.
Present:
Currently the practice of numerology in the occult often involves attempts to discover secret meanings of occurrences and to forecast the future. When used in these methods, numerology become a form of divination, or fortune telling. Frequently it can be combined with other divinatory forms such as astrology, cartomancy, geomancy, and dream interpretation.
When used in divinatory forms, numerology, also, becomes magic. Such magic, as a theory, has Occidental roots but is usually ascribed to Pythagoras. The theory or system theorizes "that all things are number and that numbers influence the essence of things. Thus number is the mediator between the divine and the earthly. So, if one performs various operations with numbers, theses operations also affect the things related to these numbers."
Taboos: On the simplest level this principle can be seen in number taboos. For example, in the American society most people considered the number 13 unlucky. Therefore, things connected with 13 are too be avoided such as the 13th day of the month, especially if it is a Friday, the 13th floor, 13 dinner guests, and so on. As a contrast in Belgium it is considered a good-luck charm for women to wear the number 13. The negativity of the number 13 is predominantly thought to have been derived from the Biblical narration of the Last Super where Judas was the thirteenth apostle. However, an earlier concept stresses its relationship to 12, a good number identified with the Zodiac, which had strong positive associations in Babylonian and other early astral mythologies.
During the 19th century, when scientific discoveries concerning light, magnetism, and electricity were being made, the theory that numbers corresponded to energy patterns of vibrations became popular.
Currently there are several interpretation of characteristics for numbers 1 through nine; the following represents a consensus:

Katherine Hansen
Dear Fellow Students: Whether you've just started ENG251 (World Literature) or are a master of early literary works, when you read our early study pieces of Gilgamesh and the Hebrew Bible, you'll notice something a little different - the importance of numerical references. I was intrigued by the use of numerology, particularly references to the number seven (7).
In Gilgamesh, seven is mentioned in the 'gate of seven bolts', crossing seven mountains to reach the Cedar Forest, felling seven cedars to Humbaba's lair, sleeping for seven nights at Utnapishtim's. In the Hebrew Bible passages, creation of the world took place in seven days (if you include the day of rest), Job had seven sons, and the Pharaoh's dreams in Joseph were of seven cattle, seven ears of corn, and seven years of prosperity and drought!
My curiosity got the better of me so I tapped into the Internet and did some research on this topic. Here's what I found ... I started with a few searched on "numerology". Unfortunately most results were links to gambling or astrology sites. Problem? I was using the wrong terminology! What I should have been searching for was "gematria". Gematria is "the calculation of the numerical equivalence of letters, words, or phrases, and, on that basis, gaining, insight into interrelation of different concepts and exploring the interrelationship between words and ideas." This definition comes from a website dedicated to Hebrew numerology
http://www.inner.org/gematria/gematria.htm
that explains how each letter in the alphabet is assigned a numerical value. Although this is a religious site, the definition of gematria changes little from one site to the next. If you want to find out more about gematria, I'd recommend a visit to this site.
Now that I knew what to look for, there was no turning back! Following is a list of websites that I found on related topics. I've included some personal comments, including my thoughts on the information each site contains and the relevance to our course of study. The first part of this list contains links to sites explaining the occurrence on the number seven (7), my pet interest. Other links include references to Pythagoras and Nostradamus, early scientists and philosophers who used numerology in their work. Lastly, where would be without our skeptics?
http://www.quebectel.com/gt/usagers/sdesr/nuprop.htm
"Numbers - Symbolism and Properties" contains a very detailed outline of the symbolism in numbers, focusing on those most frequently used in biblical-type texts. With a fairly exhaustive list of links, you can select specific numbers of interest and get information on symbolism, biblical reference, general interest, gematria, and occurrence in various literary works. Overall, this is a good site that has good information both of a general and detailed nature. However, if you're looking for detail, a word of warning: be prepared to spend some time here if you want to get into any detail. I printed off the pertinent information for the number seven (7) - it was 11 pages long!

An extremely lengthy document that explains Basque numerology, but worth reading if you have the time. This particular page takes you directly to a philosophical "discussion" on numbers and their place in the creation and functioning of the universe. The author claims that the Basque people were the true originators of numerology and that civilizations such as the Hebrews, Greeks, Chinese, and Mexicans simply copied the basque system. An interesting site put together by researcher John Zachary. Although I was unable to find any biographical data on Zachary, I did find out that he is a published author and appears to have a special interest in the prophecies of Nostradamus. Zachary uses astronomy to scientifically date events in the bible. Included in links on this site is a reference to the number seven. According to E.W. Bullinger (an author quoted by Zachary), seven represents "spiritual perfection". If this is true, perhaps that explains the predominance of the number seven in early literary works - after all, we all strive for perfection.

Another site predominantly concerned with the number seven - this time from a Jewish viewpoint. Like Zachary's site, this one points to seven as being a special number. The Jewish interpretation is that seven represents purification and freedom.

On the surface, this site appears to offer little more than the others in reference to the number seven (7). However, by scrolling down the page a way, I found there was a refreshing twist. The site author brings the mysticism and historical significance of seven into the present day and ties it in to something familiar: the seven days of the week.

Many people know Pythagoras as a great mathematician, inventor of the Pythagoras Theory associated with geometry. Pythagoras believed that everything was related to mathematics, that it could be predicted and measured. From his own research, Pythagoras believed that the letters in the alphabet corresponded to certain numbers ... sound familiar? This website contains little information about the mathematical side of Pythagoras, but does give us some background as to the man, his thoughts, his beliefs.

This site also contains references to Pythagoras and his belief that the world is built on a system of numbers. Links within this page also give you some interesting background information on Pythagoreanism, a style of teaching. I pulled an interesting quote from this particular page: "Although there is a large body of Pythagorean literature, most of it is thought to have been borrowed or copied from Platonic, Aristotelian, and Stoic material ... The seven cardinal doctrines overlap the doctrines of Platonism so to appear that Pythagoreanism joined with, or was derived from the latter." My, my ... it's interesting how that little number seven (7) keep showing it's face!

Robert Carroll, the site's author, is a skeptic of numerology. He does not believe there to be any mysticism or scientific reason behind the explanations of numerology. Rather, he favors "selective thinking", i.e., the process of selecting favorable evidence for remembrance and focus, while ignoring the unfavorable. As he points out, how many times have you read an article, or listened to someone, only to pay attention to the pieces that provide some form of personal reward or interest ... only to ignore the unfavorable or distasteful items? Personally, I found his site interesting ... it offered an alternative to the scientific/mathematical explanations. I hope you enjoy some of these sites.

The Two Zodiacs – The Great Sidereal vs. Tropical Debate
It’s important to clearly understand the difference between the two zodiacs, the Vedic/Sidereal and the Western/Tropical, and their perspective places in the world of astrology. Without this understanding it’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking one system is superior or inferior to the other and disregard their relative strengths.
The Two Zodiacs
So why two zodiacs anyway? Isn’t one enough? After all, one sky seems to have worked out quite well - thank you very much. God made no mistakes there. One zodiac belt, about 16 degrees wide, with the 12 zodiac signs ranging from Aries to Pisces rising in the eastern horizon - no problems there. It’s just astronomical fact. The stars shine equally on everyone, whether they’re standing in New Delhi or downtown L.A., so why one “Sidereal” zodiac popular in the East and one “Tropical” zodiac popular in the West?
It’s important to realize that both zodiacs are exactly the same in the sense that there are 12 zodiac signs progressing from Aries to Pisces. The elements – fire, earth, air, water; qualities – cardinal, fixed and mutable; and general characteristics associated with each sign are basically the same in both systems. Up until the last century or so, before the discoveries of Uranus, Neptune, Pluto and Chiron, the classical rulerships of the signs were used in both systems.
The classical sign rulerships are as follows: Mars rules Aries and Scorpio, Venus rules Taurus and Libra, Mercury rules Gemini and Virgo, the Moon rules Cancer, the Sun rules Leo, Jupiter rules Sagittarius and Pisces, and Saturn rules Capricorn and Aquarius.
The difference between the two zodiacs, therefore, is not so much in the contents of the zodiacs but in the calculation of the starting point of the 1st degree of Aries.
The 1st degree of Aries
In Western or Tropical astrology the calculation of the Sun passing through the 1st degree of Aries is marked by the spring equinox or March 21st. By extension, if you take out your western ephemeris you’ll note that the beginning of each season is lined up with the Sun passing through each of the cardinal points in the zodiac – Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn. The Tropical zodiac, therefore, is a symbolic system based on the sun earth relationship and is oriented to the seasons.
In Vedic or Sidereal astrology the calculation of the Sun passing through the 1st degree of Aries is marked by the Sun actually passing through the observable fixed stars making up the constellation Aries and has nothing to do with the seasons. “Sider” means “star” and therefore sidereal astrology is based on the actual astronomical positions of the planets against the backdrop of the fixed star constellations. The Sidereal zodiac, therefore, is not symbolic but is oriented to an observable phenomenon.
David Frawley writes in his book, The Astrology of the Seers, that “the Sidereal zodiac is probably the original zodiac historically, as it is the observable zodiac. The Tropical, which is an abstract zodiac, must have been derived from it, as all abstractions are usually based on underlying observable things.”
The Precession of the Equinox
An astonishing thing to contemplate is that the ancient Vedic rishis were aware of the fact that the earth changes its tilt or “wobbles” on its axis. Many centuries before the Europeans were debating over whether the earth was flat, the Vedic rishis were figuring out exactly what effect the Earth’s wobble would have on the calculations of their ephemeris’s!
Without the aid of telescopes or modern technology they calculated that the orientation of the equinoxes to the fixed stars precedes or moves backwards through the zodiac at a rate of about 50.3 seconds per year, or about 1 degree every 72 years. That they were actually able to calculate this gives us a clue as to how advanced the ancient Vedic civilization was in terms of mathematical and astronomical knowledge.
This phenomenon is known as the “precession of the equinox”. In other words, where the Sun actually is at the time of the spring equinox moves backward through the zodiac. Sidereally speaking, this year 2003, the sun was at 6 degrees 03 minutes of Pisces, at the spring equinox. Therefore, the current mathematical difference as of March 21st 2003 between the two zodiacs is 23 degrees 57 minutes.
The Ayanamsha
This mathematical difference between the Sidereal and the Tropical zodiacs is called the “ayanamsha” in Sanskrit. As another example, on January 1st 1950, the ayanamsha was at 23 degrees 09 minutes.
However, to further complicate matters there are several commonly used ayanamshas that vary by as much as almost 2 degrees from one another. By far the most commonly used ayanamsha by Vedic astrologers worldwide is the Lahiri ayanamsha, which was given the stamp of approval by the government of India.
The Historical Alignment of the Two Zodiacs
Historically, it’s generally agreed, that the two zodiacs were in alignment with one another about the year 285 A.D. with both ephemeris’s listing the passage of the Sun into Aries at the spring equinox. So what happened? What went wrong?
I don’t know that anything went “wrong”. Obviously, our civilization was just meant to have both zodiacs.
When the Two Zodiacs Will Be Exactly Opposite
Due to the precession of the equinox, the Sun will be at the 1st degree of Libra at the spring equinox in 11,232 years! Mark you calendars! Then we’ll really have a lot of explaining to do with regards to the two systems because they’ll be exactly opposite one another!! The ayanamsha will be 180 degrees 0 minutes!! I’d say it’d be worth it to incarnate at that time just to join in the debate!
The Process of Debating
Let’s face it - we’re basically creatures of habit. We tend to feel comfortable with what we’re used to and resist change. It’s hard to be clear and objective when we feel threatened in any way and it’s easy to dismiss a seemingly opposing viewpoint to save having to expand out of our comfort zones.
I think God gets a lot of mileage out of people debating and facing the stuff that comes up in the process. Take, for instance, how debating is an integral practice in the training of Tibetan Buddhist monks in the qualities of understanding and compassion. Eventually their resistances are broken down and they’re able to contain a broader, more all encompassing viewpoint.
The Debate Today
The debate between the two zodiacs is, of course, centered around one main question: “How can both systems be right?” How can I be, for instance, both an Aries in the Western system and a Pisces in the Vedic system?
It could be argued, first of all, that it’s rather simplistic to identify yourself as only one particular sign like we tend to do in the West. This is more of a recent cultural phenomenon due to the popularization of horoscope columns. In the more distant past, Western astrology was oriented more to the ascendant than the Sun if it had to be limited to one sign. Vedic astrology today favors the emphasis of the ascendant over the Sun as well.
This makes sense because the ascendant is the starting point of the horoscope and the quickest moving indication in the chart so is could be considered more personally associated with your identity or “you”. In practice, the ascendant or 1st house relates more to one’s self, identity and personality traits than any other house.
However, if you asked someone in India “what’s your sign?” they would likely assume you mean their Moon sign, since Vedic astrology is a Moon-based system and it’s primary predictive systems are based on the Moon.
Reasons for the Relevance of Both Zodiacs
The obvious reason why emphasizing one sign is limited is that there are so many potential configurations from which to interpret the same descriptive traits. For instance, your Sun may move from Aries to Pisces in your Vedic chart, but you also may still have three planets in Aries, or Mars in Aries. You certainly would tend to see strong Aries traits in the Vedic chart even though the Sun is not involved.
In fact, in my experience that’s always been the case when I look at the two charts for a particular person. They’ve never contradicted one another looking at the chart as a whole.
Some people say that your Western chart is more “earthy” and represents your personality and your Vedic chart is more “heavenly” and represents your soul. This makes some sense due to the relative vantage points in terms of distance. In other words, the stars are further away than our Sun, which is the closest star.
On the other hand, this seems to imply that your Western chart is more grounded in practical matters on Earth, and your Vedic chart is more spiritual and ethereal. Whereas, the opposite could be argued to be the case because your Vedic chart is related to the actual observable fixed stars and your Western chart is symbolic. This is why some argue that your Vedic chart can be so accurate for prediction with actual events on Earth and your Western chart is better for describing the psychological effects the actual events may have on your psyche.
The Evolutionary Pattern of the Zodiac
I think that what’s important is the realization that the zodiac represents an archetypal evolutionary developmental pattern beginning with Aries and ending in Pisces. As an illustration, the pattern of 12 signs can be visually likened to a clock. If you rotate the clock and get the Sidereal Vedic chart or the Western Tropical chart the clock still works at least symbolically if not literally because it’s based on a true fundamental pattern.
This is why I think Western astrology makes sense even though it uses a symbolic zodiac. Our day to day life on earth is integrally effected by the seasons and so to transpose the zodiac over the seasons – works. The essential qualities of the signs of the zodiac do line up with the Sun passing through the seasons. For instance, the Sun passing into Aries conveys the qualities of spring – active, energetic, vigorous creative new life etc.
Likewise, you could take any developmental pattern and transpose the zodiac. One obvious one would be take the 12 year transit return of Jupiter. Each year is like one sign of the zodiac. The first year when Jupiter is transiting over natal Jupiter is new, energetic and expansive in growth like Aries even though the actual Jupiter return may happen to land in another sign. The twelfth year, like Pisces, has qualities of dissolution and death before the rebirth again with the next Jupiter return.
The Zodiac Wrap Up
Being that the Tropical system is Sun-based the commonly held opinion is that the Tropical system is better at describing the personality and psychological patterns. Whereas, the Vedic system is better at describing the soul nature and predicting actual events because it’s tied to the actual fixed constellations.
And that’s how the reference texts read in practice. The Vedic texts shed very little light on psychological patterns and emphasize prediction whereas it’s just the opposite with the Western reference texts.
I think that the bottom line is that you can get an accurate reading, both in terms of psychological interpretation and prediction, using either system. In the final analysis I think that the accuracy of the system depends more on the astrologer than on the system.
Lesson 1 Exercise:
How to Calculate Your Vedic Chart - Subtracting the Ayanamsha
Obtain a copy of your western chart, if you don’t have one already. Make a list of your planets and their degrees as shown below. Subtract the ayanamsha or 23 degrees from each Tropical planetary position and the ascendant to get their Sidereal position.
Example Calculations:
Tropical Positions Sidereal Positions
Asc: 11 Gemini – 23 = 18 Taurus
Sun: 14 Scorpio – 23 = 21 Libra
Moon: 10 Virgo – 23 = 17 Leo
Mercury: 28 Libra – 23 = 5 Libra
Venus: 8 Libra – 23 = 15 Virgo
Mars: 25 Capricorn – 23 = 2 Capricorn
Jupiter: 9 Pisces – 23 = 16 Aquarius
Saturn: 24 Aquarius – 23 = 1 Aquarius
North Node: 18 Sagittarius – 23 = 5 Scorpio
South Node: 18 Gemini – 23 = 5 Taurus
(Optional)
Uranus: 24 Leo – 23 = 1 Leo
Neptune: 3 Libra – 23 = 10 Virgo
Pluto: 14 Virgo – 23 = 21 Leo
An easy way to do this in your head, if the planet’s degrees are less than 23 degrees in any given sign, is to add 7 degrees and go back a sign. For example, if a planet is at 11 degrees Gemini then add 7 degrees and go back to Taurus. The Sidereal position would be 18 degrees Taurus.
If you want to get the exact position of the planet down to the minute then get out a calculator and calculate the exact ayanamsha of the year and month you were born.
Use the following dates for the ayanamsha as a starting point:
January 1st 1940 - 23 degrees 01 minutes
January 1st 1950 - 23 degrees 09 minutes
January 1st 1960 - 23 degrees 18 minutes
January 1st 1970 - 23 degrees 26 minutes
January 1st 1980 - 23 degrees 34 minutes
Use these approximate figures:
4 minutes 11 seconds per 5 years
1 minute 40 seconds per 2 years
50 seconds per 1 year
4 seconds per month

History of Numerology
Science of Numbers
Numerology is the Science of Numbers. The word Numerology comes from the Latin word “numerus,” which means number, and the Greek word “logos,” which means word, thought, and expression. Numerology influences every aspect of your life. It creates the blueprint of your future, and it can open the doors to unveiling your own deeper nature, and more.
Your unique combination of numbers created by your name and birthdate can be translated into a personalized Numerology chart. This chart can provide insight into finding your way on life’s journey by offering guidance, identifying your strengths, and understanding your challenges. Learn more about yourself and others, your relationships, compatibilities, finances, and career. Understand yourself at a deeper level by discovering how your personal Numerology affects your destiny. You might say that Numerology is like a mirror that reflects your life’s journey in the form of numbers.
Three Recognized Versions of Numerology
Before you begin this journey of self-discovery through numbers, it’s important to know that there are three formal versions of Numerology in use today; the Chaldean, the Kabbalah, and the Pythagorean or Western number systems. Each version calculates your personal information differently, and therefore gives you a different interpretation of your life. The accuracy of your reading will depend on which system produces your chart and reading. The three number systems are described below:
Chaldean Numerology
The Chaldean Number SystemIn our opinion, the Chaldean Number System is the most accurate system of Numerology known today, as proven consistently by the tens of thousands of readings done for people over the past few decades.Chaldean Numerology was originally developed in Ancient Babylon and assigns the number value by sound as compared to the Western system, which assigns the number value by the sequence of the Western alphabet. The Chaldean number system uses a number formula based on calculating 1 – 8 vs. the Western number system of calculating 1 – 9. The “9” in Chaldean Numerology is considered to be a holy number and therefore is kept apart from other vibrations, except when it results as the sum of vibrations (e.g., from an individual’s complete name). In addition, compound numbers are always used. Single digits represent the “outer” aspects of a person, while double digits reveal the “inner” influences.
Documented long-term research by many authors has continued to validate the accuracy of Chaldean Numerology above all the recognized number systems available today. This system will provide you with the most accurate blueprint of your destiny
The Kabbalah Number System (which means knowledge that comes from the mind and soul rather than through a human being or a teacher) originated in Hebrew mysticism, and interprets only the meaning of the name. The Kabbalah system was developed for the Hebrew alphabet, and therefore has only 22 vibrations ranging from 1 to 400. It was adapted for the Greek alphabet, then further adapted for the Roman alphabet.
This form of Numerology calculates only the name and does not take into consideration the name and birthdate together. Because the Kabbalah system uses only part of the formula needed to construct your destiny blueprint, it is not as accurate as the Chaldean number system.
The Pythagorean or Western Number SystemThe Pythagorean or Western number system was thought to have been discovered by Pythagoras, the famous Greek philosopher, mystic, mathematician, and astronomer in the period 600 B.C. However, from some earlier recordings, the origins of Numerology may even have predated Pythagoras.
Pythagoras taught that there was a definite relationship of numbers to one’s total life experience. He studied under the Jewish Mystics and the Gurus of India and had been initiated into many of the mysteries of the spiritual teachers of the East and had both used and taught their system of numbers. Later on in life, he founded a school to pass on the mystical sciences to Western students that was based on knowledge from his travels and learned studies. The school was run by a religious brotherhood on the basis of a belief system derived from mathematics, astronomy, physics and philosophy.
Unfortunately, very little of his teachings survived other than a story told by Philolaus, a student believed to have studied under Pythagoras. It is suspected that after Pythagoras’ death, Philolaus declared that a certain system of numbers (we assume his) had been developed and blessed by Pythagoras before his death. Philolaus proclaimed Pythagoras as the “Father” of Western Numerology and for over 2,500 years, people accepted this declaration as valid since there was never any evidence to disprove this claim.
Kabbalah Numerology

The Kabbalah system was developed for the Hebrew alphabet, and therefore has only 22 vibrations ranging from 1 to 400. This form of Numerology calculates only the name and does not take into consideration the name and birthdate together. Because the Kabbalah system uses only part of the formula needed to construct your destiny blueprint, it is not as accurate as the Chaldean number system.
Western Numerology
Pythagoras was known as the “Father” of Western Numerology
Philolaus proclaimed Pythagoras as the “Father” of Western Numerology and for over 2,500 years, people accepted this declaration as valid since there was never any evidence to disprove this claim.
The Western number system assigns the number value by the sequence of the Western alphabet and uses a number formula based on calculating 1 – 9. Years of experience prove that this method is not as accurate as the Chaldean method. The Western alphabet assignment totally discounts the most important aspect of numerology–the concept of vibration and the numerical designation of each vibrational pattern. As a result, the Western number system virtually destroys the validity of the name numbers (or any other name number) and their meaning. What Western Numerology fails to acknowledge is the fact that the language of the numbers, coming off our name, gives us the most important facts about the direction in which our lives are unfolding.
Summary
Numerology is a respected and ancient “science” that defines who you are and what your destiny is by using numbers in a certain way. The Chaldean number system uses the unique vibrations of the numbers calculated from your name and birthdate to provide insight and to assist you in living a more successful and meaningful life.
Our intent is make you aware that this science exists and to offer an easy way to utilize Numerology to enhance your life by gaining more understanding into your personality, your strengths and talents, obstacles to overcome, inner needs, emotional reactions, understanding others, relationships, and more. In short, self-knowledge is the “key” to a greater perspective on life and preparing you for the future, keeping in mind that ultimately you must make the final choices.
We believe we are providing you with the most accurate readings possible based on years of feedback through consultations using the Chaldean number system. However, there is no information or system that is infallible. Readings are always subordinate to the individual’s belief system and their power to choose who they are now and what they would like to become. The ultimate results depend solely on the past, present and future actions, thoughts, and way of life of the person concerned.

Introduction to Gematria - Hebrew Numerology
Interested in Gematria? Read Harav Ginsburgh's daily teaching for the most relevant, wonderful, and inspiring findings. We recommend that you view the pdf file, so as to insure you get the Hebrew right.
Introduction to Gematria - Hebrew Numerology
In Hebrew, each letter possesses a numerical value. Gematria is the calculation of the numerical equivalence of letters, words, or phrases, and, on that basis, gaining, insight into interrelation of different concepts and exploring the interrelationship between words and ideas.
Here is a basic introduction to Gematria that discusses different systems for identifying the numerical equivalence of individual letters, how these letters can be calculated according to the implicit word-value of their names.
The assumption behind this technique is that numerical equivalence is not coincidental. Since the world was created through God's "speech," each letter represents a different creative force. Thus, the numerical equivalence of two words reveals an internal connection between the creative potentials of each one. (see Tanya, Sha'ar HaYichud VeHaEmunah, chapters 1 and 12.)
There are four ways to calculate equivalence of individual letters:
Absolute Value
Ordinal Value
Reduced Value
Integral Reduced value
The Tikunei Zohar explains that the concept of reduced value is related to the spiritual world of Yetzirah. On that basis, a relationship can be established between these four forms of calculation, the four spiritual realms, and the four letters of God's name

What is Kabbalah ?
In the West, Kabbalah is one of the many ways from which a mystic can reach understanding of the Creation. It is derived from ancient Jewish spirituality and it keeps deep wisdom about human and body spirituality.
The word Kabbalah comes from Hebrew Kábbal, which means "to get something".
One of first users of Kabbalah was Abraham. He used the name Abram until the very old age. The letter H (hebrew he) was added at his age of 99. At that time, the God chose him to be "a father of many nations" (Genesis 17:3-5), and gave him knowledge which made him greatest mystic and astrologer of his time ("...and all kings...soon appeared at his door")
Kabbalah enlights the most complex secrets of human existence and can be accessible to everyone, it's teaching is universal and permits everyone to reach highest spiritual spheres.

Western Sidereal Astrology
Western Sidereal Astrology

Based on Tropical and Sidereal astrology, there are two different opinions among western astrologers about the starting point Aries, in the zodiac.
According to the Sidereal astrology, the starting point is at a particular fixed position in the background of stars. But according to the tropical astrology which is adopted by the majority of Western astrologers, the starting point is when the position of the Sun against the background of stars coincides with the Northern hemisphere vernal equinox.
As the Earth spins on its axis, it wobbles and causes the precession of the equinoxes where the vernal equinox moves gradually backwards against the star background.
This occurs at the rate of about 30 degrees which is one Zodiacal sign length every 2,160 years. Hence, the two zodiacs are aligned only once every 26,000 years, with the most recent alignment being about 2,000 years ago when the zodiac was principally established. This concept has led to the conceptual basis for the Age of Aquarius, the dawning of which coincides with the movement of the vernal equinox across the cusp from Pisces to Aquarius in the star background.
Planets
- Sun - Moon - Mercury - Venus (Female Sign) - Earth - Mars (Male Sign) - Jupiter - Saturn - Uranus - Neptune - Pluto
Signs
- Aries - Taurus - Gemini - Cancer - Leo - Virgo - Libra - Scorpio - Sagittarius - Capricorn - Aquarius - Pisces

Controversial decisions mar Sydney Test
It was unfortunate that controversial umpiring decisions had marred the Sydney Test. Umpiring by Bucknor and Bensor was not even club standard !
BCCI has appealed to the ICC against the 3 match ban imposed on Bajji. No racist remarks were made, they said.
It is unfortunate that a gentleman's game is plagued by controversies and the gentlemanly Indian players are subjected to pressure. Australian players have been playing a psychological game all the time. When others resort to the same measures, they object !

Sachin scores 38th Test Hundred, 154 not out !
Sachin created history by scoring 154 no, his 38th Test hundred. He was involved in a 129 run partnership with Harbhajan Singh, who scored 63. This is a batting revival with both Laxman and Sachin scoring centuries. India finished with 532.
In the other Test, Ashwell Prince scored 98 and along with Boucher ( 59) gave RSA the first innings lead.
Both Tests seems to be well balanced and may prove thrilling at the end.

Laxman scores century !
History repeats itself. The same duo who shone during the last Australian tour, Laxman and Dravid, shone today. Laxman scored 109 and Dravid 53. Their partnership of 175 put India back into the game. India was 216/3 in reply to Australia's 463.
India was reeling at 8/1, when Jaffer was removed by Brett Lee. Then this wonderful partnership came into being, Laxman scoring his 12th hundred in Test cricket. Ganguly with 21 and Tendulkar with 9 were at the crease. Let us hope they continue the good work !

Umpires create controversy
Andrew Symonds was given not out at 30 against the bowling of Ishant Sharma. TV replays showed that he is out. Now Australia is 427/8, with Symonds on a 150. All these controversies add problems to India's woes.
Gavaskar has opined that those with Test experience should be made umpires. He has a point there.
India began well yesterday, gettting two early wickets. But this umpiring decision proved to be detrimental to India.
All marks to Symonds for a superb feat !
