The Helio Geo Centric Universe !

In Western Astronomy, the Ptolemaic Universe was geocentric. The great poet Dante based his cosmology on the Ptolemaic Universe.

Copernicus changed all that with his Heliocentic Model.

In the East, the Indian astronomer, Neelakantan, proposed a helio geo centric Universe, known as the Neelakantan Universe. This was copied by none other than the Guru of Kepler, Tycho Brahe and he called it the Tychonic Universe.

According to Einstein, all truths are relative and depends on the Observer and his frame of reference. Heliocentric means based on Helios, the Greek word for the Sun, which is derived from the Sanskrit Heli, as per the dictum Heli Soorya Chandraama Sheetharashmi. 

Heliocentric means observed from the Sun, with Helios, the Sun,  as the frame of reference. You cant go the Sun, put a chair there and observe from there ( May be the Noble Professor can do it, as he has called his software, Vishnu, which means all pervading in Sanskrit ).

Geo means Earth and geocentric means based on the Earth.

So children are talking about geocentric and heliocentric, without having any knowledge of Astronomy/Astrology. Ignorance can be excused, as nobody is omniscient !

Now we are under attack from the modern Thibeaus and Whitneys. We have to defend our Philosphy/Astronomy/Astrology from their vicious attacks. So let us be intellectual warriors ( Arundhati Roy is an intellectual warrior. She said Kashmir is Pakistan's, but then she is an intellectual warrior for Pak !)

More logical is Mentalism( Vedanta ) than both Theology and Cosmology which maintain that Everything came out of Nothing. Vedanta explains that there is no material creation, as Matter or Energy cannot be created or destroyed and that the Sum Total Energy in the Universe is an eternal constant, Brahman, Absolute. 

However, there is a mental creation and that the Unvierse is a dream in the Cosmic Mind.

It is more logical than Theology which states the God created the Universe out of Nothing in six days and even more logical than the Big Bang Theory, which states that the Universe was created out of Nothing by Quantum Fluctuations. How can everything come out of Nothing ? ( Somebody said that the Big Bang Theory is nothing but Religion ! )

In his "History of Western Philosophy",  Bertrand Russell defined Philosophy as the No Man's Land between Science and Theology. All dogmas belong to Theology, all established facts belong to Science. In between there is No Man's Land and this is Philosophy ! Ultimately we are on the side of Philosophy, not Theology or Science !

In the West, the divine Hermes Trismegistus spelt out the Law of Correspondences saying " That which is on High is that which is on Below, that which is on Below is that which is on High, in order that the Miracle Of Unity may be perpetual".

The physical Sun corresponds to the Inner Sun, as per the Law of Correspondences. As Above, so Below ! 

I will define Rajju Sarpa Nyaya here. For that,  we have to go to the basics of Vedanta and the definitions of the Self, the Non Self etc.

Dehendriya prana sukhonamadaya

Sarve Vikara Vishaya sukhadaya

All sensory organs, all emotions,

That which is Attributeless

Yes,  all this is SELF, Satyam Sat Atmeva Jagath Samastham,  and when seen through the Mind ( Universal ) it appears as the Universe, with its myriad forms and names, as Nama and Rupa ! This is Rajju Sarpa Nyaya of Vedanta. The rope is mistaken as the serpent, the Universe is seen through the veil of Mind, through the veil of Maya ! ( We had talked about Mentalism, that all this is Mind, before ) !

Yatra Bhasayathi Visvam

Ananda, param Ananda,
Sa bodhasthwam Sukhe Chara !

In Whom all this is illumined

Like the blueness in the sky

Astrology is mystical !

According to Esoteric Wisdom, by Sun we dont mean the physical Sun and by planets we do not mean the physical planets. The Sun is situated in the Heart Chakra, Saturn at the Mooladhara Chakra, Jupiter at Manipura exactly as in the Solar Logos. Here we are talking about Man, the Microcosm replicating the Macrocosm.

The parts are greater than the Whole ? Undoubtedly. The Whole is greater than the sum of its parts ? Indubitably. We are puny parts of the Great Whole, called by us as the Universe. Wholeness is contained in every part !

Let us thank the Lord for these discussions, which can enlighten all.  In his Neurophysiology of Enlgihtenment Dr Robert Keith Wallace said " Enlightenment is the state of perfect order, zero entropy and depends on the harmonious functioning of every part of the body ! He said India is the home  of the most profound knowledge and procedures for the development of Physiology !

The Exoteric and the Esoteric !

There are two types of meaning for all in Universal Mysticism, the Exoteric and the Esoteric.

What happens is that people take the exoteric or the  literal meaning and say we are superstitious. The esoteric meaning is known only to an Initiate.When we say we worship snakes, it is not the physical snakes we worship. We worship the inner Snake, the Kundalini, the Serpent Power which lies coiled in humans ( vide Sir John Woodroffe " The Serpent Power " ).

Similarly we do not worship the physicial Sun !

Look at this verse

Sooryam na tva Graha pathim

Jagath Ulpathi Karanam

Vakshyami Veda Nayanam
Yada Brahma Mukha Srutham.

The mystic meaning is that the Almighty Self, which transcend the three states relative, Jagath Ulpathi Karanam, is all in all and the I am telling Thee the Eye of Learning, the Vision of the Vedas, Astrology, and it cometh from a higher states of Consciousness, yada Brahma Mukha srutham !

When we light a Lamp and worship the Lord, we are worshipping the Divinity within. The mystic Ward said " Within, within and within "!

Jnanagnim Bahyavagnim cha Ekeekritya Prapoojayeth

Now when we say that it is not the physical Sun which we worship but the Inner Sun, the Divine Solar Consciousness, which is transcendental and which transcends Swapna, Jagrata and Sushupti, then this  verse becomes pregnant with philosophic meaning.

Madya sthithou prasarathi prakriti kriya su

Mystical Scholarship is different !

It is time we draw a line between academic scholarship ( quoting from books ) and mystical scholarship. In the Masonic Initiation, Dr Wilmhurst says that the wisdom of Jesus confounded the academic, but unenlightened scholars of his era.

Aurobindo says the same thing. This Wisdom is unfit and dangerous to the ordinary human mind and liable to perversions and loss of virtue, if revealed to vulgar and unpurified spirits. So they devised an outer system, the exoteric ( that of temples, churches, mosques and synagogues ), efficient but imperfect,  for the profane. Genuine transcendental wisdom is for him who is purified in soul and awakened in Spirit ! There are Seer Wisdoms which utter their meaning only to the Seer !

Transcendental Wisdom reveals only to the elect and hides Herself from the profane.  For,  this Science of Alchemy can only be taught to suitable and worthy men, because the misuse of it and the powers arising from it is conducive to general and personal evil !

Datteyam Pratidinam Dukham

Jeevithe natra Samsaya !

Ye are the light of the world, ye are the salt of the earth!  In Him are all existences contained and we are on our way to Self Actualisation, Swa Vimarshaha Purusharthah !

The Law of the Superconscient Path 

If you are sure of the Divine Call and if thy soul wants to fufill that Divine Will, there can be immense progress for thee in the difficult path of Yoga.

If the call is not true, and only the lure of thy ego, the end of thy effort will be a spiritual disaster.

And if it is not the soul’s assent and vigour but only an egotistic interest or an intellectual pride or only the lower mind which tries to clutch at some side attractions of the fruits of Yoga, then again there can be no surety for thee in the rugged path of Yoga.

The Titanic inner battle going on in the human bosom is formidable and the outer instruments of man have no force to carry him through the severe rigours of this difficult journey. Terrible are the ordeals, trials and tribulations. Only his spirit’s indomitable will and the insatiable thirst for Immortality is sufficient for him to succeed.

Things that were hidden by the silence of the hours
Ideas that found no voice on human lips
The soul’s pregnant meeting with Infinity
Had come to birth in him and taken fire ! - ( Aurobindo ).

In the initial stages of Yoga, one will find that a power not located in the body but possessing it, is thinking for you and propelling you and that your body entire is moved by that force and not by yourself !

Even if His presence is felt behind the veil in the difficult path of Yoga, it is like the winter sun behind the clouds and saves one not from the rain and snow ! But the help is there, even when it seems to be withdrawn, but the background of the sunless total darkness still hovers around us !

The Divine Mother hath a face beautiful but She also has another face. The other face is the total darkness associated with tests and tribulations, the Dark Night of the Soul and Dark Night of the Spirit.

The Dark Night of the Spirit is combustion. Combustion is passion, combustion is Crucifixon. One will have to bear the Cross and may be crucified by the people one loves !

Can the Divine Crown be given to a weakling ? Or is Self Actualisation a prize to be given without effort ? Your trust will be justified ultimately and if you strive rightly, thou shalt have ! But the dread Law of the Path is there and the formidable trials and tribulations have to be overcome, in order to attain Self-Actualisation !

We find that there many trials and tribulations on the path divine. These are parts of the process and tests of fidelity.

When with pain thou hast destroyed the inner enemies, other thousands will rise up like a ten headed Hydra. The Negative Aspect will vomit its hordes to wound and threaten thee, to bring thee to terra firma. Heaven will test thee with its pitiless trials and cold denials, testing here and there thy will to trascend, testing thy patience, purity and perseverance. In thy anguish thou shalt find thyself isolated, the inner enemies furious in thy path, the positive elements unwilling above thee. Powerful, cruel, menacing, innumerable and close are the sinister powers that profit by Ignorance and which will block change in the body, the change which will be inimical to them. Far away are the Positive Elements who are permitted to help thee.
Each step of the ladder climbed is only a step on the way and there are many stairs to climb, to reach Heaven’s threshold, the Goal of Self Actualisation. Each victory which thou prize is only the prelude to a hundred thousand fierce battles, which are about to come ! But thou sayest Divine Grace is me, I have the Lord’s support and there are divine forces out to help me. Knowest thou not that Divine Grace is far more difficult to obtain than the Wealth of this world or the mundane Crown ?

Ask His instruments and they will tell you how often He had hid himself from them, how often He had hid in his veil mysterious , that they found themselves in the midst of Hell, in the abysmal darkness, totally defenceless in the anguish of the battle !

The Way or the Path is not easy. It is dangerous and difficult, if not long and rugged. Each step forward is a battle. There are alarming descensions and there are endless ascensions and higher and higher peaks left to conquer.

It has been referred to as Jacob’s ladder in Freemasonry. Tennyson defined it as

The world’s great altar stairs
Which slopes through darkness upto God !

This is the golden ladder by which we ascend to Self Actualisation, crossing many a trial and tribulation .

At every step there is unfortunately an ambush and a pitfall at every turn. We have to have implicit faith and an indomitable will to conquer our inner enemies. A thousand enemies, seen or unseen, will start up against thee, powerful against thy weaknesses and frailties, and awfully majestic against thy ignorance ! Fear not, the Grace Divine is with you and thou shalt not fail !

Vedas, cognised in higher states of Consciousness !

Like the noble Sir Philip Sydney, it seems I have to take the pen again ! An Apologia for Astrology ?

The root of this controversy is the word Vedic. A word has many connotations.

Veda means knowledge. Vid to know. So Veda means knowledge only.

Now the Christian and Muslim scholars in Kerala talk like this " Njangalude Veda pusthakathil.... " meaning it is said so in our Vedic text. So to a Christian, his Veda is the Bible and to the Mulsim, his Veda is the Quran. One guy told me that theirs ( Muslim ) is the Fourth Veda, the Atharva Veda ! Veda means knowledge, may be theological, may be philosophical, may be religious, may be scientific ( Vedic Science ).

The word Vedic can be used anywhere, Vedic Philosophy, Vedic Maths, Vedic Foods, Vedic Architecture ( Vastu ). Vedic Temples etc.

I had a discussion with one Antony Chirayath, who told me that Vedic Foods are a rage in the West. Then after one month, when I used the term Vedic Foods, he objected to it, saying that that will imply that it is of  the Hindus ! So that is the problem, the word Vedic creates problems in people coming from other civilizations. The problem is psychological.

Now Dr Frawley et al may have used the word Vedic in the sense it represents Knowledge and not that it was divinely revealed.  Even if it was divinely revealed, why should other scholars object to it ?

Aurobindo discovered the Supermind. He got it in higher states of Consciousness. If you reseach on the word in some book, you will not find it. He talked about a Mind - Overmind - Supermind Axis.

Mahesh Yogi talked about the Seven States of Consicousness. Transcendental Consciousness, Cosmic Consciousness and states above. Shoud we go and do research to find out in which text it is revealed ? If so, then scholars will come out different intrepretations and there will be mudslinging !

So, friends, let us abandon this talk about researching into books like the Bible !

Astrology is a mystical science, not a physical one and the only real Pratyaksha mystical science !

The Tropical Zodiac precedes, roughly, 72 years per degree and this is known as the Precession of the Equinoxes.

At the time of Pope Gregory, the seasons were changing and Gregory was in a fix. He empowered Christoper Clavius to head the Gregorian Calendrical Reforms Committe. The Sine Tables of Aryabhata and Madhava were here. Also the Tan tables of Brahmagupta. A's Sine Table was the first sine table erected in the entire history of Maths, says Wikipedia.org.

Now Clavius learnt Astronomy and Maths from the  Jewish Guru, Pedro Nunes. Clavius empowerd Matteo Ricci, to go to India, to Kerala and learn from the Time Keepers of Panchangas, to learn from the Brahmins and the Moors, this astro mathematical knowledge, which alone could solve the problem from them.

R is the magic figure in Astronomy and is computed thus

Pi = C/ 2 r

C = 2 Pi r

360 = 2 Pi r

r = 360/2Pi

r = 180/Pi

r = 57.3 degrees

r = 57.3*60 minutes

r = 57.3*60*60 seconds

r = 206265 seconds and this R in seconds is Known as the The Magic Figure of Astronomy.

The base of all astro algorithms for Astro Software is this R.

Bhujajya / Trijya = Opposite Side/ Hypotenuse .* R

Even though Bhujajya resembles the modern Sine , it acutally is R Sin.

Clavius. Matteo Ricci et al got access to Indian trignometric functions and inverse functions ( arcsin, arccos, arctan, cot, secant and cosecant ) and with the help of Indian Maths, (India in general and Kerala in particular) , solved the problems of the Julian Calender.

Pope Gregory had to add ten more days to the Julian Calender. Today is Oct 4 and he decreed, like God, that tomorrow is Oct 14 ! This is the so called " Gregorian Calender", which Albert Pyke, the Father of American Freemasonry called the Vulgar Era !

This is what happens when you base everything on the Tropical Zodiac, which is preceding roughly 72 years per degree. On the other hand the Sidereal Zodiac doesnt precede, as it is static.

The Julian Calendar had to be replaced by the Gregorian, not the Vedic Astro Calender, which is sidereal or based on the fixed stars. The Gregorian also may need modification later on.

While other Religions have one Book and one Prophet, the Eternal Law, the Sanantana Dharma has got

Dr Kenneth Chandler points out that " The greatest discovery of India has been the discovery of Pure Consciousness and the mapping out of the architectonic structure of Pure Knowledge".

The Vedas were never written, but cognised by the Rishies in higher states of Consciousness, in Cosmic Consciousness and above. The 18 sciences of the Philosophia Indica are eternal, self existent truths coexistent with Creation and hence Apaurusheya or divine in origin.

The Ganitha Nirnaya, one of the best books on Mathematical Astrology

Now the genius of Puliyoor Purushotaman Namboothiri condensed the thousands of slokas of the 18 Siddhantas into 1000 odd slokas, called the Ganitha Nirnayam. It is one of the best books on Mathematical Astrology ever written. He was ably assisted by the Maths Professor, Prof Krishna Warrier.

In the Kerala system, 14 major perturbations of the Moon are highlighted and 14 trignometric corrections are done for the 14 lunar anomalies.

Why call the Sidereal Zodiac " Hindu ". Is there a Christian Tropical Zodiac?

Christian Theology is against Astrology ( "Thou shalt not practise
Divination" - Deuteronomy ). Popes condemn Astrology as Magic and
Superstition, as Paganism and Witchcrat.  How can Popes follow the Vedic
Calender ?

True. But he was the Redeemer of the Piscean Age, the Age of Pisces. But the

work in a scientific world !

The Land of Light

Bha means Light and Rathi means attachment and Bharata is the land where people are attached to Light, where the call of the Infinite is listened to with keenness! This is the land where the Vedas and the Upanishads first saw the Light, where Bhagavan Sankara established monasteries for the propagation of the Eternal Law, the Sanatana Dharma.

Even after the onslaughts of the Moghal Empire and the British Empire, we have not changed our faith. The same Faith  which our Lord taught,  the Yogis cognised,  the Rishies disseminated and our poets confirmed.

Now a "Pratyaksha Professor" ( A K Kaul )  is coming out with a theory which, as one scholar pointed out, can shake the foundations of our knowledge and belief !

This is the land graced by high intellectuals like Aurobindo and Ramana Maharshi, Dr Radhakrishnan, Vivekananda and Tagore. Yet we are challenged by a "Pratyaksha Professor" of low learning and low intellect !

Astrology indicators !

All have agreed that Jupiter is the Veda Karaka. There was some opposition to highlighting  Sun in Gemini  as an astro indicator.

Angular Jupiter is a visible factor. Mercury rules Ganitha and both together can make one an astrologer. I am not going to talk about the Sun in Gemini !

Why cant the Indian scholars accepts authentic Western books ?

I had an experience, when I wrote a Malayalam article quoting Kant, the German philosopher, one man asked me " Why do you quote Kant? ". I said the Germans rate him as the world's greatest. There are some people in the Indian civlization who are hardliners. Also in the West. Also in the Islamic. We should not be like them. We should not slip into fundamentalism !

Tropicalists vs Siderealists !

This fight between the Tropicalists and the Siderealists have been going on for years. There are Siderealists in the Western ( Fagan,Cheiro who developed their own Ayanamsas ) and there are tropicalists in the Eastern !

About ten years ago, in a Western list, I quoted the Vedic Astrologer, Jeff Armstrong and was labelled as " arrogant". Jeff Armstrong's article was " You are not the Sign that you think you are, the Greek blunder". I said the Greeks have blundered and Moser Sirgar II, the Moderator got hot with me and said "Kumar, do you know how arrogant you are?". Now I am far more mature and avoid Tropical vs Sidereal fights !

I did not blame the Western scholar. How will you react when somebody says  the Indian Astronomers, Brahmagupta, Bhaskara, Aryabhata, Madhava, Parameswar, Jyeshtadeva, Neelakanta etc were wrong ? Similarly he reacted. He was influenced by Hipparchus, Ptolemy, William Lilly, Kepler, Laplace etc and how else can he react to the statement  that his forefathers have blundered ?

According to the Tropicalists, the Siderealists are arrogant. And according to the Siderealists, the Tropicalists are arrogant ! (Thibeau and Whitney  said the ancient Indians did not know Astronomy or Maths ).

There is no need for such fights. Astrology can never be proved as a physical science.

There are 13 Ayanamsas and Hari's is the 13th. Cheiro's Ayanamsa takes 72 years per degree precession. Cyril Fagan established Western Sidereal Astrology.

Since Astrology is a mystical science, let us be tolerant. Paddi ji pointed out yesterday that in some cases, Hari's Ayanamsa worked. Fine. If Lahiri's works, fine. Or Raman's Or Cheiro. Or even  the Zero Ayanamsa of the Tropicalists. Astrology should work and we should come out with good results !

We will be happy when that happens !

There is another cycle which is controversial. The Metonic Cycle, occurring in 19 years.

The seven intercalation months are Adhi Masas. Discovery attributed to Meton. fifth Century BCE.

The Three Levels of Being !

There are three levels of Being. They are

Doing    - Gross Level
Thinking - Subtle Level

Being     - Unamanifest Level

This can be illustrated by the Bubble Diagram. Like the waves of the Ocean. On the gross level, we find agitations. This is the gross level of Doing. When we go to a deeper level, there is more calmness. This is the Subtle Level of Thinking. When we go still deeper, we find the Unmanifest level, the true level of Being.

The subtlest of all subtle thoughts come from Being. The Rishies and the Yogis know how to tune to this level.

The Science of the Absolute, Geetha, identifies these Three Levels of Being and calls them

Ila is the Mother of the Lunar Dynasty. Saraswathi is the River of Inspiration flowing from the Supramental Truth Consciousness. And Sarama is the Hound of Heaven.

Indian Astronomy prior to the Western

Against the Pingree and the Naugbauer Hypothesis, we have the Dr Raju and Dr Joseph Hypothesis.

According to Western Learning, the first book on Astronomy was the Almagest by Ptolemy. Date 2nd century CE.

There was a text prior to that, the Vedanga Jyothisha by Lagadha. Date 1150 BCE !

Dr Raju vehemently argues, in his "Cultural Foundations of Mathematics", that the Almagest was influenced by Indian sources. Dr Joseph opines that the Indian mathematicians used differential equations, at least 600 years before Newton and Liebniz, in his "Crest of the Peacock, the Non European Roots of Mathematics".

Dennis Duke, of Florida State University, says " We have only to conclude that Ptolemy did not invent the equant. " If Ptolemy did not invent the equant, as Westerners widely believe, then who did ?

"The bisected Indian equant model is pre-Ptolemaic' says he. Other Greek books, prior to Ptoemy, may have influenced Indian Astronomy,says he. Then what are those books, prior to the Almagest, which had influenced the Indian system? The answer is "unknown sources".

Remarks Duke " Indeed, since the very earliest investigation of the Indian models by Western scholars it has been presumed that the models are somehow related to a double epicycle system, with one epicycle accounting for the zodiacal anomaly, and the other accounting for the solar anomaly (retrograde motion) This perception was no doubt reinforced by the tendency of some Indian texts to associate the manda and sighra corrections with an even older Indian tradition of some sort of forceful cords of air tugging at the planet and causing it to move along a concentric deferent . Since our goal in this paper is to investigate the nature of any connection with ancient Greek planetary models, it is only important to accept that the models appear in Indian texts that clearly pre-date any possible Islamic influences, which could, at least in principle, have introduced astronomical elements that Islamic astronomers might have derived from Greek sources. If the Tropicalists "tropicalise" the Vedic Zodiac ( "which is imported from the West" ), it will go the Gregorian Way. The Vedic Astro Calender will become the Gregorian Calender ( again to be rectified later ! )

We have the Pingree and Van der Werden Hypothesis, the Naugbuer Hypothesis that the multi step algorithms of Indian Astronomy approximated a Greek Planetary Model, an eccentre and epicyclical Model. We have to respect them, as at least they admitted that India has an Astronomy. Not like Thibeau or Whitney who said that the ancient Indians  had no knowledge of Astronomy or Maths, when they saw gigantic calculations like 311.04 trillion year cycles ( Maha Manvantara ) and the Cosmological Cycle (4.32 billion years ). They said these calculations are plagiarised from the Romans and the Greeks!

Dr Carl Sagan opined that while Christians were calculating in thousands, Hindus were calculating in trillions !

The Radius Vector, said Kepler, sweeps out equal areas in equal time. 

Parameswara in the 15th century and Nilakantha in the 16th talked about Vyasardha Manda Karna. Vyasa is Diameter. Vysardha is Radius and Vyasardha Mandakarna is nothing but Radius Vector.

Kepler's Second Law states that

All planets move faster at Perihelion and move slower at Aphelion. That was known to the Indian astronomers. Otherwise they wouldnt have called Aphelion, Mandoccha ( Manda - slow ) and Perihelion, Sheegrocha ( Sheeghra - fast ) !

Kerala astronomers

This is the diagram of Manda Kriya, Reduction to the Heliocentric Coordinate System, given by the equation R e Sin M, where e is eccentricity, R is the Radius of the Circle, M is the Anomaly.

The Manda Anomaly is found out by subtracting Aphelion, Mandoccha from the Mean Longitude.

Mean Longitude - Aphelion = Manda Anomaly.

R = 360/ 2 Pi or 180/Pi or 57.3*60*60 = 206265 seconds or Vikalas.

This amount thus got is added to the mean longitude if ML > 180 and deducted if ML < 180.


The Kerala astronomers predate their Western counterparts, particularly Kepler and Laplace by centuries. In his Thesis " The Model of Planetary Motion in the works of the Kerala astronomers", Prof Ramasubramaniam, Physics Professor, Madurai University observes " In conclusion, it may be noted that there is a vast literature on astronomy, including mathematics, both in Sanskrit and Malayalam produced by the Kerala School during the period 14-19th century. Only a fraction of it has been published and so far only a few studies of these texts have appeared ".
