The Symbolism of Lord Parjanya

What is the symbolism of Lord Parjanya ? He is the Twelfth Sun, amongst the Dwadasa Adityas, mythologically the sons of Aditi, the Heavenly Mother.

The Sun in Mesha is Vidhatha and the Sun in Pisces is Parjanya. It should be noted that when He transited Meena, precipitaton occurred. It started raining here from March onwards !

The Four Seasons of Western Astronomy are created by Him, Sol or Ravi. He also creates the Six Seasons, the Six Rithus, that is His passage through the Twelve Major Signs creates the Seasons ! The lunar months of Chaitra and Vaishakha constitute the First Rithu, the First Indian Season, Vasantha. He also creates the Twenty Seven Njattuvelas !

His passage through the 27 constellations, the 27 Jnattuvelas,, causes Rainfall and vegetation, from which cometh food, Adityath Jayathe Vrishti / Vrishter Annam Thada Praja.

468 deaths have been reported due to Sunstroke. 302 of them in the Andhra Telegana Region.102 in the last 24 hours. Effects due to El Nino, they say. 2015 has been declared as the Year of the Christ Child.

In such adverse circumstances, we need Lord Parjanya's help. May He make the Njattuvelas rain heavily, not only on the 825 km long Malabar Coast, but other places as well !

Maxwell pulls Kangaroos to victory

Great batting by Glenn Maxwell and co saw Aussies score 376. SL started well, with a century by Sangakara, but could only muster 312.

Aussies' formidable batting line up, displayed its wonders today, as they amassed 376 off the hapless Sri Lankans. A blistering 102 off 53 balls by Maxwell and half centuries by Clarke, Smith and Watson saw them amass 376, pushing the match away from SL.

Despite Sanga's spirited 100 ( his third consecutive 100 ), SL could not make it. Dilshan's 62 and Chandimal's 62 went in vain !

A great match, with both sides scoring over 300 and the better side winning !

Strategies for India !

Gayle and Bram Villiers are impact batsmen, who can change the complexion of the game.

In one WC match, Pat Symcox, the offspinner bowled the first over to Gayle. The ball pitched on the middle stump, turned and took the edge of the bat and went to slips. Gayle out for a blob ! That is how the South Africans took Gayle !

We advocate the same method. Let Ashwin bowl the first over to Gayle . The ideal combination, off spinner to left hander !

Hope Ind beat WI on 6th.

Regarding Bram Villiers, his Achilles heel is getting himself run out. Just tighten the fielding when he comes.

Another impact player is Shahid Afridi. He can be a huge threat to any side. He is vulnerable in the initial stages. He has a habit of trying to hit the first ball for six. Highly praiseworthy, but risky. So tempt him with spin !

Astronomy of Ancient India

Early Indian Astronomy

The practices of astronomy and astrology in ancient India had their roots almost four thousand years ago. Much of what we know about Indian astronomy comes from the Sanskrit sacred books called the Vedas. These religious texts were a series of hymns composed over several hundred years, and offer intriguing insights into the way Indians of the time viewed the sky. As in most ancient cultures, events in the heavens were believed to have direct effects on people. The practice of astrology, of divining a person's future based on physical phenomena, was a driving force in the advancement of astronomy as a science.
In the Veda texts, the gods were called Devas, which means 'bright' and refers to the luminous nature of the sun and stars. The Sun, comets, the sky, dawn, and the horizon were all deified based on their attributes. To the ancient Indians, the horizon held an immense amount of mystique: it was there that the question 'Will the sun rise again?' was answered every day. A beautiful verse from a Veda mentioning the Indian affinity for dawn says:

'Thou art a blessing when thou art near
Raise up wealth to the worshipper, thou mighty Dawn
Shine for us with thy best rays, thou bright Dawn
Thou daughter of the sky, thou high-born Dawn.'

The earliest Veda text mentioning astronomy is called the Rig Veda, and was written around 2000 B.C. At that time, the earth was considered to be a shell supported by elephants, which represented strength, and were themselves supported by a tortoise, representing infinite slowness.

Indian Astronomy in the First Millenium

As time progressed, Indian astronomy became more scientific and less spiritual. Beginning in the first century, it seems clear that Indian astronomers recognized that the stars are the same as the Sun, only farther away. Verses mention that the night sky is full of suns, and that when our Sun goes below the horizon, a thousand suns take its place. This is an incredible scientific leap in thought. The Earth was at this time considered to be spherical, and various astronomers attempted to measure its circumference. Interestingly enough, the Sun was widely believed to be the center of the universe, an idea which pre-dates western science (with the exception of a few Greek believers) by about 1100 years. However, this idea may be much older: vague references to the sun being in the center of the universe exist in Vedic writings from as early as 3000 B.C.

In the 5th century, a great Indian astronomer and mathematician named Aryabhatta advanced this heliocentric theory and also discussed his idea that the Sun is the source of moonlight. He also studied how to forecast eclipses (see photo below). His books and others were translated into Latin in the 13th century, and profoundly influenced European mathematicians and astronomers.

Several Indian scientists of the 6th century also were the first to advance the idea of gravity. They noticed that a special force keeps objects stuck to the earth, and hypothesized that the same force might be responsible for holding heavenly bodies in their place. The idea pre-dates Newton's conception of gravity by about 1100 years.

Chyuthi Samskaram

Chyuthi is Orbital Eccentricity. If the motion of the planet is circular, there wont be any eccentricity. As it is elliptical, eccentricty has to be computed. Its values range from 0 to 1 at Ellipse, 0 at Circle and 1 at Parabola ! Chyuthi Samskaram
in Indian Astronomy means to compute the eccentricity of the planet and reduce the Mean Longitude of the Planet to its Heliocentric Longitude ( Vikshepa Vritteeya Manda Sphuta ).

How Old is the Vedic Civilization?

Using Astronomy and Maths, we have computed the Age of the Vedic Civilization at 5567 years

The Fiducial Star, Moola

Lambda Scorpi was called Moola by the Indian astronomers. Moola stands for Moola Adhaar, the Base, the Root. The Rishies meant that this Star is the Base of the Zodiac, its Root !
There are reasons for this
Moola is in line with the Galactic Center, Sagittarius A*.
At that time, Moola was the First Star and Jyeshta was the last.
The Arabs called it Shaula, the Scorpion's Tail.
We feel that ISRO should provide more photos of the 27 constellations of the Indian Zodiac.

Happy Thula Vishu and Thula Varsha !

The Sun entered  Zero Degree Sidereal Libra yesterday at 0602 PM, initiating Thula Vishu, as well as Thula Varsha.  Vishu or Equinox occus twice on Apr 14 ( Solar ingress into Aries ) and on Oct 17 ( Solar ingress into Libra ).Today is Thula 1,  Aslesha upto  25 Nadis and 48 Vinadis and the Tenth Lunation, Dasami.

The indications to Thula Varsha had  already begun and it rained heavily day before yesterday. Thula Varsha is the North East Monsoon. As the point in the

Indian Ocean becomes hot, near the Tropic of Capricorn, cool winds come from the Bay of Bengal. pick up moisture and pour over India peninsular.

We expect more rains in Thula.  Vrischika end ( Dec 15 ) will see the end of the Monsoon Season in Kerala. On Dhanu 10th ( Dec 25 ) , farmers will start irrigating their fields, which they were not doing from May 29 onwards.

The North East Monsoon, Thula Varsha, comes as rains in the afternoon normally, with fireworks ( lightning and thunder ). People are warned not to stay outdoors, not to stand behind solitary trees and not to touch window bars. Thunder and lightning had wreaked havoc in some places in Kerala yesterday !

How accurate the Kerala Calendar is was proved true  as heavy rains and thunder hammered Guruvayur at 0420 PM yesterday. I disconnected the modem and pulled out of office at 0430 PM. Day before yesterday also I pulled out at 0645 PM, when thunder and rains took over. Thunder can damage hard disks.

The Indian mathematicians have not erred and as scheduled  Thula Varsha begam in earnest and it is raining cats and dogs in Guruvayur now.

Fierce rains slashed Guruvayur at 0420 PM onwards and it is raining torrentially.

The Heavens prove Hindu Calendar true !

The Megha Visphotana or Cloud Explosion at Guruvayur on the evening of Thula Vishu or Thula Varsha day ! ( 0420 to 0510 PM ).

Did the Lord send the shower to prove the Hindu Calendar true ?

Q & As about the similarities in the horoscopes of Modi ji & Shivaji.

Q - What are the similarities in these horoscopes ?

A - In both horoscopes, Jupiter is angular. An angular Jupiter can destroy 100 K afflictions, Laksham Doshan Hanti Devendra Poojya. In both horoscopes, Jupiter is in Aquarius. Jupiter in Aquarius gives the effect of exalted Jupiter in Cancer.

Q - Is Jupiter the King Maker?

A - Yes. He is the largest planet in the solar system. 1300 earths can be fit into Jupiter. He played a vital role in the horoscopes of British Sovereigns. He was angular, either rising ( in First )  or culminating ( in Tenth ).

In Shivaji's horoscope, he is in the Seventh and in Modi ji's, 4th. Shivaji had Saturn and Venus exalted. Modi ji has Mercury exalted with Jupiter, equivalent to exaltation,  Kumbhe Karkatakal Phalani.

Mars, in both horoscopes, is well posited. In Modi ji's he is in the Ascendant, conferring Ruchaka Yoga and in Shivaji's, he is in the benevolent 11th.

Q & As about Farm Tourism.

Q - What is Farm Tourism?

In Kerala, which is an agri state, Farm Tourism is promoted as a new tourism product. Without much investment, F T can be marketed, as Kerala has 30 lakh hectares of gross cropped area. More than 33% contain plantations of Tea, Coffee, Rubber, Cardamom et al and more than 33% contain coconut plantation. The State has 350 K lakh hectares under paddy cultivation.

5% of the total land has been allocated for  F T..There are schemes which are under way to prepare the plantations/ Farms to receive tourists by presenting a positive image of the Farm and Agri as a whole. The Agri Sector is therefore revitalised and  will increase tourist arrivals in the State.

Farm Tourism is an integral part of Eco Tourism but there is a slight difference. While artificially created landscapes are part of Eco Tourism - gardens, pond etc - the goal of Farm Tourism is to show the curious tourist about Nature in her pristine purity. .

Q & As about the Messenger of the Solar System, Mercury.

A - Academic knowledge and degrees are the prerogative of Mercury, Vidya Mathula Karako Budha. Books, publishing, knowledge, mathematics, sculpture & arts all come under his domain. If he be exalted in one's horoscope, the native will become a great scholar. ( Example horoscope is that of Augustus Caesar who had exalted Mercury in Virgo ).

( Siddhi means psychic or occult powers. There are eight Siddhis. They are Anima, Mahima, Garima, Laghima, Prapti, Prakamya, Iishitva & Vashitva,)

Navamam Siddhi Dhatree cha

Today is the Eighth Lunation

Today is the Eighth Lunation, that is the Moon in between 84 and 96 degrees from the Sun and Maha Gauri is the Deity that is worshipped during the Festival of Nine Nights, Nava Ratri. Maha Gaureethi Chashtamam !

Gauri means White. She is as pure and white, sinless. Mythology has it that She lost her complexion while travelling in the forest and Her meeting with Lord Shiva made her regain Her Fair Complexion !

The Prikriti of Sankhya and the Maya of Vedanta became the Shakti or Devi of Tantra. She is the beginingless Universal Mind, which brought the Universe into existence  ( kayanaumeya sudhiaiva Maya Yada Jagath Sarvam idam prasooyathe ) and hence called the Mother of the Universe, Jagath Amba !

In the Epic poem, Ramayana, She is Seetha, the idol of Indian Motherhood. In Her Hands is the Key to the luminous Kingdom of Heaven, to Self Actualisation !

How glorious is the Eternal Law !

Ya Devi Sarva Bhootheshu Maha Gaureethi Samsthitha
Namasthasyai Namasthasyai Namasthasyai Namo Nama

Today is the Seventh Lunation

Today is the Seventh Lunation, that is the Moon in between 72 and 84 degrees from the Sun. The Deity that is worshipped during Nava Ratri is Kala Ratri. ( The Kanya Shukla Nava Thidhis are celebrated as Nava Ratri, that is the NIne Lunations in the Bright Fortnight in the sidereal month of Virgo or Kanya ).

Saptamam Kala Ratreeti Maha Gaureethi chashtamam.

Kala means Dark and Ratri means Night. This is the symbolism
of the Dark Night of the Soul and the Dark Night of the Spirit.

Without Her Grace, Salvation is not possible !

In Bridal Mysticism, Vandanam means to bow before the Tutelary Deity. The Masters of India knew that Yoga and Vedanta are ultra worldly sciences, which are  best suited for ultra worldly people. So they brought in Tantra and installed Tutelary Deities in all cities and villages, so that worldly people can have the same mystic experiences like the Initiates.  Bhakti Yoga is for the worldly man. She is Bhagavathy, the Damsel Divine adorned with the Six Attributes ! Arpanam means to sacrifice one's life for Deity. Dasyam is to be Her servant, serving All and Loving All !

She and He are ultimately One. This is well expressed by the Mother of Auroville

Without Him, I exist not
Without Me, He is Unmanifest !

Happy Sixth Day of Nava Ratri !

Today is the Sixth Lunation and the Deity that is worshipped during the Festival of Nine Nights is Kartyayani, Shashtam Karthyayaneethi cha. ( Moon in between 60 and 72 degrees from the Sun ).

Katyayini or Kartyayini was born as the daughter of Katyavan. Katyavan was a seer who perfomed penance to get the Universal Mother as his daughter.

One of Her greatest festivals is Thri Karthika, which is celebrated on the astersim of Karthika, during Mandala Kalam. Mandala Kalam is the 41 day holy period, starting from the sidereal month of Scorpio or Vrischika. . Thri Karthika is celebrated in Her Temples, Kadampuzha, Kumaranellur and the Ayyanthol Karthyayini Temples.

I will consecrate my Poem to Thee
As a garland or necklace
On Thy Sacred Chest
Which is Thri Karthika !
Please hear our prayer

Happy Panchami in Nava Ratri !

Today is the Fifth Lunation ( Moon in between 48 and 60 degrees from the Sun )  and Skanda Mata is the Deity which is worshipped during the Festival of Nine Nights, Nava Ratri. ( Panchamam Skanda Mathethi... ).

Skanda Matha  is the mother of Skanda, the Military General of the celestials. She observed penance to get the hand of Lord Shiva ( which was magnificenlty portrayed by Kalidasa in " Kumara Sambhava"  )  and gave birth to Skanda, the Military Chief.

Another glorious Devi Temple, the Chottanikkara Amba Temple. .

Legend has it that this was once a dense forest and a tribal called Kannappan used to live here.  He was a devotee of the Mother Divine and he used to sacrifice an animal daily to the Goddess. He had a cute daughter who had a pet, a cow. Kannappan used to sacrifice cows also. One day Kannappan could not find an animal to sacrifice and he told his daughter that he is sacrificing her pet cow. She entreated him to sacrifice her instead of her beloved cow.

The place where Kannappan used to sacrifice cows is of low elevation and is called Keezhe Kavu, a place devoted to the Mother Divine as Time Personified, Kali, who is Kaala Swaroopini.

Give us Wisdom, give us Prosperity
Give us Fame, O Mighty One
Give us comeliness, give us Victory
Give us Bliss Everlasting !

Monsoon Fury of Magha or Regulus !

It was a sunny day yesterday in the morning , when we got the news at noon that South Kerala is flooded and a lot of landslides had taken place.

At 0800 PM, I got out of my office and went to the nearest ATM. Then it was raining heavily. Power went off at that time and I couldnt complete the transaction. I got the full blast of the rains. The roads were flooded  and I had to walk ten minutes through the flooded road to reach the Rly Station.

Even now it is raining cats and dogs. Holiday for schools in Trivandrum 1

The Solar Transit of Regulus ( Persians called it Magh and Indians Magha ) can be destructive, as the rains now prove !
