It was Vararuchi, who assigned digits to the letters of the Alphabet ( Vararuchi Kritam Paral Sankhya ). He was one of the Nine gems in the Court of King Vikramaditya. The other gems were Varaha Mihira, the father of Astrology & Dhanvantari, the Father of Medicine !
